Choosing the right contractor/Orange County NY

Posted by Bill Bateman on Mon, Aug 14, 2017 @ 07:54 AM

For most of us purchasing a home will be one of the largest investments you will make in your life. It takes lots of preplanning, negotiation and work to get into the home of your dreams. Purchasing a home is part of the American dream that starts as a dream at a very young age when growing up with your family and wanting the same things when you grow older. Now the time has come and you are the proud owners of a home to start your life. A home brings much happiness and goals in life; a roof over your head,  bathroom for personal hygeine, a kitchen to feed your family, a dining room for eating and entertaining, a backyard........... You get the point!!!  With a home and family also comes a busy life, especially when kids come into the picture. Between cooking, cutting grass, cleaning, etc.; time becomes limited. So basically that is what most of us strive for in society, that crazy life!!! Sounds crazy but for centuries that has been the way of life and there is no greater satisfaction than creating and achieving what you have worked so hard at.

Now with anything in life, including our own bodies and health, you need maintainance. Owning a home comes with responsibility and upkeep over the years you own your property. Wheather it may be a broken pipe that may pop up or a renovation to enhance your home, choosing the right contractor for these issues/upgrades is a necessity. With so many fly by night contractors it is good to do your homework to protect yourself and your investment.

What to look for when choosing a contractor:

  • Word of mouth recommendation is usually always the best
  • Years of business under the same name
  • References
  • Experiences and knowledge in all phases
  • Proper insurance
  • Clean and neat
  • Puncuality
  • Good communication from the start
  • Detailed contract of work being performed

Snowplowing Monroe, NY

Posted by Bill Bateman on Tue, Aug 08, 2017 @ 08:40 AM

Winter not too far away and its time to start thinking about how you will get out of your home/business when the storms strike. Here in Orange County, NY we can experience some of the most brutal storms in the country. Mostly we are always on target for the well known Nor' Easters that paralyze our area for days at a time. It is always good to preplan and line up a good snowplowing contractor so you are not left out in the cold this winter, literally.

RCSLINC_Plow-resized-600.png

Whether you own a business or a home, snowplowing is a must to ensure you can stay open for business or leave for work in the case of snow. Now for most of us snow is nothing more than a nuisance and most people feel moving snow is a brainless job. The concept is pretty basic but for a professional company comes a lot of thought and preparation for winters around here way before any snow falls. Early preparation and equipment inspections are crucial to maintaining a reliable fleet that will be able to withstand the forces of nature when it hits.

WMB Construction offers:

  • Commercial/residential snowplowing

Is your roof in need of replacement?

Posted by william bateman on Wed, Nov 26, 2014 @ 03:20 PM

Here in the northeast we can experience some pretty brutal winters that can leave our homes at high risk if you don't have a good roof. The strongest part of your home may be the foundation but without a adequate roof, your home is worthless! Crippling snowstorms are very common in our area and the weight load of snow on our roofs can result in collaspe of your roof, as we have just seen in Buffalo, NY

Another common problem is ice damming. Ice damming occurs when heat loss from your home due to inadequate insulation melts snow and it freezes when it reaches the soffit of your home. As ice forms water backs up under the shingles causing major water damage to the interior of your home.

A poor roof can leave a home with very little value due to the damage it can do. Sometimes the damage can go unnoticed for years until it is too late! Rot and mildew can run rampant if issues aren't corrected quickly and efficiently!

What are the risks of a poor roof?:

  • Interior water damage

  • Rotten wood

  • Dry rot

  • Mold/mildew

  • Health problems

  • Allergies

  • Termites

  • Carpenter ants

  • Roof collapse

A easy way to quickly renovate your bathroom at half the price

Posted by william bateman on Wed, Mar 06, 2013 @ 08:54 PM

Bathrooms are one of the most frequented rooms in your home. A rooom that takes care of all your essential needs everyday of the week and year. But year after year your bathroom may become deteriorated or completely unusable. A very common problem within bathrooms is mold and mildew growth, most of what you can't see. New bathroom remodels can range in the tens of thousands when all said and done. Other competitors like Rebath or Bathfitters offer a cheaper alternative of capping your existing tub and walls. All that does is lock in mold and mildew!!! In comparison, its like capping a rotten tooth and covering the problem.

bathroom kitchen remodel monroe ny

This is a customers tub that the competitors wanted to cap. Could you imagine hiding this mess by simply capping it?!?! Also when capping a tub your inside dimensions become smaller leaving less bathing room.

This is what we found hidden behind tile walls! Loaded with mold and mildew and hidden for years! What happened here is the old sheetrock walls absorbed the moisture and started to grow in a dark and damp atmosphere. Mold and mildew allowed to grow can take over an entire house leaving it unlivable and without value!kitchen bathroom remodel chester nyThis is the steel tub we removed. Hidden under drain was the evidence of a rotten tub! Stell tubs are the cheapest tub you can install and will always rot out in the drain area. Thank god we caught this one in time before it started to leak causing thousands in damage. Another reason to rethink capping your tub!!!bathroom remodel monroe nyWith a tub removal you expose all the ailments that need to be removed! This was mold and mildew under the tub. We treated it with bleach to kill it. If capped it would keep growing for years!bathroom surround monroe ny rebathWMBCONSTRUCTION removed the shower walls/tub completely and installed a new 4 piece maintenance free shower/tub! In two days the customers were up and running! All the mold and mildew was removed and not capped!!

What is the advantage of tub removal:

  • Removal of any mold and mildew

  • New tub and new trip lever/waste

  • New divertor in wall

  • Peace in mind that you family is safe from harmful mold

  • Added value to your home

Benefits of installing an egress window

Posted by william bateman on Mon, Dec 17, 2012 @ 06:46 PM

If you are considering remodeling your basement you will likely find that your town requires the installation of egress windows. Most building codes mandate that egress windows be installed in order to provide an adequate escape route in an emergency situation, such as a fire. Besides adding safety and increasing your home's value, egress windows can greatly increase airflow and light, changing what was once a dark basement into a light, airy living space.

Egress windows are designed to allow people to escape a basement in the event of a fire. Most often, egress windows are installed during a basement renovation in order to comply with local building codes. Many towns have specific measurements that must be met, so it will be necessary to contact your local building-codes office in order to find out exactly what size window you must install in your basement.

Egress windows come in as many varieties as typical windows, with as many different levels of quality and insulation, depending on the manufacturer. But all egress windows are designed to provide a safe escape route in the event of emergency. Most often, they provide about 6 square feet of roughly rectangular window surface. Check with the manufacturer if there is any question of whether a particular window is suitable to be used as an egress window.

WHAT IS AN EGRESS WINDOW?

An egress window is a window that is required in specific locations in a dwelling and is intended to provide an emergency means of exiting a dwelling. Windows must meet specific size and requirements to qualify as an egress window.egress windows concrete orange county ny

WHERE ARE EGRESS WINDOWS REQUIRED?

Egress windows are required in every room used for sleeping purposes (bedrooms) on any floor and in basements with habitable space. If you are constructing a new home, the code requires that you put an egress window in each bedroom. It also requires an egress window in the basement if habitable rooms will be finished in the basement. If you install a basement bedroom or bedrooms, an egress window is required in each bedroom. If you have an existing home and you add a sleeping room in an unfinished basement, the code requires that you install an egress window in the sleeping room or rooms.

WHAT ARE SIZE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN EGRESS

WINDOW?

An egress window must satisfy four International Residential Code (IRC) criteria:

• Minimum width of opening: 20 in.

• Minimum height of opening: 24 in.

• Minimum net clear opening: 5.7 sq. ft. (5.0 sq. ft. for ground floor).

• Maximum sill height above floor: 44 in

The window must have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 sq. ft. Net clear opening refers to the actual free and clear space that exists when the window is open. It is not the rough opening size or the glass panel size, but the actual opening a person can crawl through.

The window opening must be operational from the inside without keys or tools. Bars, grilles and grates may be installed over windows but must be operational without tools or keys and still allow the minimum clear opening.

You might assume that a 20-in. by 24-in. window would be acceptable for egress. However, those dimensions would yield a net clear opening of only 3.3 sq. ft. To achieve the required net clear opening of 5.7 sq. ft., a 20-in. wide window would have to be 42 in. high. Likewise, a 24-in. high window would have to be 34 in. wide
